Mike: Welcome back to the flipnerd.com REI Classroom where experts from across the real estate investing industry teach you quick lessons to take your business to the next level. And now, let’s meet today’s expert host.
Pete: Hey guys, I’m Pete Asmus with The Turnkey Investor and I’m today’s host on the REI Classroom. Today’s topic is all about how to play chess with a full deck of cards.
Mike: This REI Classroom real estate lesson is sponsored by theinvestormachine.com, FlipNerd’s private investor coaching program and your blueprint to investing success.
Pete: I love that topic. I love the saying, the play on words because the reality is when you’re building out a team and when you’re building out really your future . . . because if you think about it, the team is going to help you get where you want to go. They always say the weakest link on the team really kind of determines the distance, the speed and everything else, because if you have somebody that is lagging then you’re going to have a problem.
Here’s the other issue. It may not even be that this other person could be slow. It could be that they’re going in a different direction. They don’t care as much about what your goals are, where you’re going as you do. Maybe they don’t care as much about the details. Maybe they don’t care as much about integrity. Maybe they don’t care as much about customer service.
Maybe they don’t care as much about a multitude of different things that you do. Maybe you’re focused on long-term relationships and they’re focused on short term. They don’t really care. You’ve got to make sure that when you’re building out a team you build out a team that everybody is going in the same direction, that everybody is building and supporting each other. You don’t need any crab in your bucket pulling you back into that bucket.
You want to make sure that you’ve got a bunch of cheerleaders. I mean it’s funny but it’s true. You want people that are putting you on their shoulders to get you to stand taller. You want to have people that are supporting you, that are really cheering you on and want to see you do well, not people that are trying to trip you, that are making backhanded compliments and that are really doing things to really disrupt you and to destroy you. Make sure that everybody in your team is powerful.
Here’s the other thing. Sometimes we have people that are close to us. Maybe that close person to us is in our team or they’re in our circle of influence for lack of a better term. Because of their negativity, because of their disruptiveness, they’re preventing you from getting where you really need to go. Sometimes you’ve got to cut that weight. Sometimes you have to make a hard look at who’s in your team and who really shouldn’t be in your team and make that cut because if you really want to go farther you’re going to have to do so in the best way possible in the most efficient way possible. That doesn’t mean that you have a whole bunch of anchors holding you down when you’re trying to move forward. You want to make sure that you’ve got a whole bunch of people pushing you forward. You want fans, not anchors.
When you’re looking for a team and you’re looking to really expand that out, make sure that you’re also honest with what you’re good at. A lot of times what we like to do or maybe what we think is a great thing or it’s a prideful thing, we want to do that but we’re not necessarily good at it. Because of that pride, we keep inhibiting other people from being able to take over that sector or that section or that whatever strategy and help us get to a farther distance.
Instead, what we do is we covet that. We hold it back and inevitably we prevent ourself from growth. A lot of times I see it, and honestly, I see it in me, too. The biggest disruptor of growth is pride and ego. It’s me saying that I want to do it all myself. It’s me saying that I want to be the one, I’m the man, I’m this, I’m that. A lot of times what we need to learn to do in order to get even further is let go of that pride, let go of that ego and let our team really do what they’re good at.
Guys, I’m Pete Asmus. This is the REI Classroom. I’m really grateful that you spent this time with me. I know it was just a few minutes. Hey, the next one that we’re going to be doing is all about communication with a side of reality, because sometimes man, people just have no clue when it comes to how to communicate. Guys, thank you so much. As always, go make something happen. See you guys. Bye.
