Real Estate Investing Classroom Show Transcripts:

Mike: Welcome back to the flipnerd.com REI Classroom where experts from across the real estate investing industry teach you quick lessons to take your business to the next level, and now, let’s meet today’s expert host.

Gene: Hey this is Gene, the founder of the Residential Assisted Living Academy and your host for the REI Classroom. TGIF, thank God it’s Friday? Hey, I’m an entrepreneur, I’ve never gone to Friday and said TGIF. I get to Friday and I’m more like, “I can’t believe it’s Friday already.”

Mike: This show is sponsored by passiverental.com

Gene: I mean, it’s Friday already and there’s so much to do, there’s so much to accomplish, there’s so many opportunities out there. See, I meet people who live their week, and they just hate their job. They hate their boss. They can wait for Friday to come. They’re just living for Friday, and I get to Friday and say, “I can’t believe that I’ve already spent this time and it’s gone on my list is longer than when I started the week.” And that’s what I love.
You know there’s a joke out there. I’m on Facebook all the time. If you check me out, you’ll see, and I forward things on and get in trouble for doing it but on Facebook there’s this one where entrepreneurs are the only people that work 80 hours to avoid a 40 hour work week. But you know what? I don’t work I love what I do, and I can’t call it work because if you love what you do, then it’s not work. You’re just doing what you love to do. I love to do what I do. That’s called passion and if you love to do what you do, I mean it’s a wonderful thing. It’s a beautiful thing, and I encourage you to find something that you love doing.
I do residential assisted living. I do that because yeah, I love real estate, and I love business, and I love numbers, and I love people. I love helping people, and I love helping not just the elderly but you know I’ve never wanted to have employees and so a little secret for you there. That’s why I always call them team members. I don’t want employees, people that work for me and people that you know feel like I’m the boss and I’m the man, I’m the El Jefe. I don’t want that
What I want is team members who I’m helping them get what they want. Where they want to be, where they want to go. As a matter of fact, that’s what I do when I get together on the rare occasion with a caregiver, one of my homes I ask them, “What are your dreams? Where do you want to be five years from now?” And one of them comes and says, “Gene, I want to own my own home.” My response is always just the same. “I’d hate to lose you but what can I do to help you?” That’s a rare response.
Most bosses are going to say, “Well, that’s it. Let’s get rid of this person, if they want to leave us or short term and . . . ” No, no, no. If I’m going to lose anyway, I’d hate to lose you. You’re great. You’re awesome but what can I do to help you get there? And that’s a whole different mindset. It’s a team player. So the question is really, you’re on the bus, you’re on the right bus, let’s get you on the right seat on that bus.
Now, unfortunately, a lot of those people who have good intentions, never get to where they want to be because they get caught up in that rat race. They’re on that wheel and they just never get off that because all the stinking thinking in their own head. They get caught up in their own, “I can’t because” or the crabs in life. Those people that are sucking their life out saying, “you can’t, you won’t you shouldn’t.” Get away from those people. Those crabs in your life who are sucking the life out of you, sucking the juice of life out of you, are never going to help you get where you want to be. And it could be somebody that you love dearly.
I’m not looking to break up couples or anything like that, but you got to hang around with people. People like right here on the REI Classroom in FlipNerd. People like Mike and all the wonderful people that you meet right here. Network with them, mastermind with them, hang out with great people who want you to succeed. Who want you to get bigger and better because if you want to give, if you want to grow, you’ve got to hang out with people who want you to grow and want you to give. Want you to be more than you can be.
I’m one of those people who truly can believe, you can be all you want to be, you can go and do all you want to do. Nobody is holding you back. All of the stinking thinking it is right here. If you want to do something, you absolutely can. I mean nobody has . . . I’ve seen people that are literal stumps, no arms and no legs accomplish more than people who are physically fit and mentally master minds and they don’t do anything. I’m that educated derelicts at the end of bars who know everything and do nothing. I met people who are incredibly capable that live under bridges, panhandling for money that probably make more than people who are working 60 and 80 hours a week but they’re not doing anything. They’re not reaching their dreams. Guys, you can. It’s up to you. TGIF no.
I mean, I get to the end of the week and I want more week. But here’s the reality. If you’re lucky, you get 100 years. Most people are going to make it to 100 years old. Life expectancy is what mid-70s. You weren’t born yesterday. I’m 55. If a take away 55 of my hundred boxes and if I make it to 80, I’ve only got 20 something boxes left, 20 years. How many more full moons is that? How many more sunrises and sunsets is that? How many more years is that, that I can have to do what I want to do, I want to accomplish. What do you have left? What are you going to do with it? Hey, I know I’m getting a little heavy but if you want to do good and do well, residential assisted living is one choice.
