That we call the freedom series with eight industry legends. Today’s episode is with Pat Preecort what’s up bad. How are you, buddy?
Pat: [00:00:31] I’m awesome, brother.
Mike: [00:00:32] Awesome. Hey, total. Totally fitting. You’ve got the American flag right behind you. And the reason we’re doing this whole event is happens to be around just the, just the idea of kind of latching onto the holiday.
That’s coming up 4th of July and you know, I’ve been thinking about, uh, I mentioned this earlier, so some people have already heard this, but. Just, you know, I think my favorite holidays of the year, this might sound a little weird, uh, the 4th of July and Thanksgiving, and it’s opportunity to kind of reflect on all that.
We’re [00:01:00] blessed for all that we, you know, that we have in this, in this opportunity, in this industry and in life and certainly in this country. Right. And so, uh, that’s why I wanted to do this event. So hopefully everybody’s getting some good value here. Next time we got my buddy Pat free court, really an industry legend, just a huge giver himself.
Everybody that I bring on. I talked about this before, when I do all these events, I just, I asked my friends to join me because they’re big givers. We all like to help each other. And they have a lots of share that hopefully inspires you to take your business to the next level. So maybe just take a minute for those that, that might not know you that are on here, just kind of who you are.
And then I want to kind of jump into what, you know, maybe share what freedom means to you. Sure.
Pat: [00:01:37] So I’ve been involved in real estate since, uh, uh, late nineties when, um, strong, heavy in the short sales stuff for many, many, many, many years have gone through the fix and flip phase for a bunch of years, got into what I call, um, high risk, high reward properties, which are expertise coming out of the negotiation of, of liens in debt.
In the short sale space. [00:02:00] Got us into understanding how to get rid of. Um, title issues and things like that, or contaminated oil tank issues and all of that kind of crazy stuff, right? All this stuff, nobody else won. And we spent a lot of time. There spent a bunch of years in the education, specifically in the real estate education space, along the way that really helped move me into, at least that was a seed worked where I am now, which is in a personal.
Probably the best way to describe it is just personal behavior, understanding our behavior and how to alter our behavior to get the results we want. And, um, that’s probably the simplest way to describe it. Competitive athlete played 17 years of rugby, a bunch of years in martial arts in cage fighting and, um, Wow.
That’s me. They’re not shell.
Mike: [00:02:46] I’m glad you’re my friend. I don’t ever want to fight you back. Hey, for those of you that are listed, that are, that are joining in here or even those that are joining later, just, just chat. If you haven’t already, what freedom means to you. And I want to ask you that same question, Pat.
You’ve been in this business a long time. I know [00:03:00] you’re I know you’re a big Patriot and I know that you, as an entrepreneur, you appreciate all the opportunities that we’ve had, um, being a part of real estate and being in this country. Right? So maybe just share what freedom means to you as an
Pat: [00:03:10] entrepreneur.
Um, so I don’t know if it says an entrepreneur is just a human soul. Right. And I follow, I bought this a while because it was my, what I thought was freedom was in freedom. Um, as a matter of fact, it seemed to get further, further and further away from freedom. And it never even, it never even occurred to me what was going on until I met some, some dudes that I work with from the personal development side that were.
55 years old, they’re coming out of wall street. They have more money than, than they could ever do anything with. They have more cars in house and know what to do with, but they’ve burnt through the third marriage. Their kids freaking hate them and they can’t even get there. They can’t even get a friend to go out to dinner with them unless they’re pie.
You know what I mean? And they thought they knew what freedom [00:04:00] was too, but they’re misalignment with what it meant. So my point is I spent a lot of time deep diving into this. I’ll break it down really simply Mike into three types of freedom. Right? One of them is freedom from something like liberating ourselves from something.
Second is freedom to do something. And then third, and this is the big one freedom to become someone. That we want to become. Right. And, and the, the there’s a migration between the three, but the first one, freedom, something that’s like freedom from the 905 job. Right. As an example, well, you got to earn that.
There’s certain things you got to do to make that happen, but also could be freedom from other anchors in your life. Other commitments, other things, other holes you’ve dug yourself into. And I’ll, I’ll, I’ll say this and it’s not going to. May resonate differently with different people, but every time we make a commitment, um, we give up freedom.
Every time we make a commitment, we give up freedom. So freedom isn’t [00:05:00] necessarily the Holy grail of it all. And an example would be in my marriage, right? The married 27 year, 27 awesome years. But I’m not absolutely free. If I made a commitment to marriage and one woman for life, you see the balance there.
We have to appreciate kind of where those hands. So, you know, three pieces of freedom from something freedom to something and then freedom to become someone. And that part is what I focus on the most. Who do we want to become in order to have what it is we want to have in this, in this world? Does that make sense?

Mike: [00:05:35] maybe elaborate on, um, To become. So I’ll let you, you, you and I both know there’s a lot of people and that’s part of the reason I created this group. I know there’s a lot of people that still want to take their business to the next level, whatever that means for them. Like we, we don’t, you guys, we just had Jerry Green on here and he’s doing, you know, he said he had 37 deals in the pipeline.
He’s doing 1520 deals a month. This is not one of those groups where it’s like, Hey, sure. You’re not. [00:06:00] You know, there’s something wrong with you, right? Not at all. Everybody has different goals. Everybody has, you know, everybody has different, a different vision, what they want their life to look like. Right.
And so it’s not that that’s not the goal. The goal is whatever your goal is to hit that. But maybe you could share there are you, and I both know there’s a lot of people that are, have plateaued at some level that is not where they want to be. Maybe let’s talk about, cause you talk about the freedom to become that person.
Right. Yeah. Some people kind of hit a wall and they just, they can’t get there for some reason. Talk, let’s talk about that a little bit.
Pat: [00:06:29] Okay. So let’s talk, let’s use it. Context of state goals, right? If you’re talking about Platt towing and not being able to, um, get, get up to the next goal or level, or what are tier, whatever you want to call it.
Right. Um, so let’s, let’s start with the idea that, and then we’ll spend a couple minutes here on goals because it’s just, we always talk about goals. Well, most goals never get even started. Nevermind, achieved and goals are a path to freedom. So we’ll use it in that context. Right. Um, if you’ve ever [00:07:00] set a goal.
Any goal. The very first question we got to ask her, so said, I’m assuming the goal is something that we haven’t achieved yet. We’re not there yet. We don’t have it yet. Right. It’s beyond where we’re at. That’s makes sense to be a goal. Um, the first question we could ask ourselves is not the how or the what it’s the, who, who do I have to become.
In order to deserve that end result, because what I mean by that is to, to have something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do it, something that you’ve never done, that humans, we got to first become someone we’ve never been. And we fail often asked that question. It might require that we become a little more courageous because we had to overcome certain fears.
It might require that we get a little more, yeah. Discipline in our daily actions. We add consistency in, into the process. It might require that we become a little more grateful for what we already have, because our lack of being grateful is what stops us from I’m driving harder and further along. Right.
Yup. That’s a starting point [00:08:00] in breaking, breaking through these plateaus to that next thing. Um, and that’s what I say the starting point, but first is always around goals. What are, if you’re at a plateau and you can’t punch through it, and there’s a thing here you want to get to. Right, right. Um, you got to get crystal clear on what that thing is.
An example would be, I want to lose some weight that ain’t crystal clear. There’s a whole bunch of ways that can happen. And how do you even know if you achieved it? When it’s got such a loose definition example, Mike, you come into my gym saying, man, I want to lose some weight. So I lop off your right arm, done.
Mike, pay up. I met Pat and it sounds like crude and kind of like a moron, like example. But I see people go to they’re 56 years old. They find have their arm lopped off. And they’re like, no, that’s not what I meant. Cause it’s, I’m not feeling what I meant. I wanted to feel like. Yeah, you weren’t very, very clear on your goals.
What you wanted was to be a, have a fulfilled life. Well, you ended [00:09:00] up with was a life of achievement, lacking fulfillment. Cause we didn’t get clear on what it is we really want. And I’ll go back to the weight, losing weight. Pat, what I want is to lose 20 pounds. Good Mike, but we’re not there. All we can do is measure it now, but it still doesn’t mean anything to you.
What is 20? We found those I’d say, Hey, I want to make a million bucks. Money has no meaning weight has no meaning material things have no meaning. And without meaning they’re unachievable. Hmm without meaning they’re unachievable. But when that same guy tells me, man, my marriage has been kind of on the rocks.
And I think it’s because I’ve lost myself, competence. I feel like shit. I look in the mirror. I don’t even like the guy looking back at me and I want that mojo back because I want my wife back and I want, I want, I want her to be happy to see the guy sitting across from Methodist the way it looked, but the way he feels himself.
Alright, I can deliver you that. And we’ll use the weight just to measure, but here’s the power in this, right? When the going gets tough and it [00:10:00] always does in our achieving of goals, particularly if they’re challenging goals, it always gets difficult. There’s always problems along the way. It never goes with plan a, B, C, or D.
Right. We always need the next backup. If we don’t have that deep seated, real, genuine, why we’re doing it, the real one, the meaning behind it, we’re going to quit. Don’t have to ask me or believe me, look at your own life and how many goals that have been quit in our lives. Right? All of us, including mine without attaching the meeting, then the third piece to it.
Once we’ve got clarity, we want to go and we had a little meaning a little. Is there a level of commitment? It’s funny. I just got off the phone with a cop, with a client of mine talking about his commitment and his lack thereof. And I always use a qualifying question. How committed are you? If one is, you really don’t give a crap.
If it happens, it does. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t 10 being you’re as committed as you are to taking your next breath. Right. Which for all of you listening, you never miss your next breath. [00:11:00] You always take it always no matter what, no matter how busy you are stressed, you are how tired you are, no matter what you always take.
Your next breath, that level of commitment to 10. How committed are you? Typical answer would be like a seven or an eight, sometimes even a nine. Right. So you’re a nine is as good as the zero. Here’s why, when you just tell me it’s a nine, leave yourself a way out. Well, what if, well, guess what, you will take that exit door somewhere along this journey, because you’re going to be challenged to that level.
That’s how life works. And if you leave that door open, even crack you sneaking through it, when you’re weak, when you’re down, when you’re depressed, when you’re in your rough, unless you’re a level of tenure commitment, don’t count. You’re going where shit you’re wasting your time. That’s what we start in getting over you as, how do you get to that next level?
That plateau, you gotta put a little energy, UCLA, get a little juice up, just talking about, you’ve got to get into the game here and desire this stuff and want this stuff. [00:12:00] And it admit yourself, be honest with yourself when you’re looking at that goal, you’re defining exactly what it is. If you’re not feeling it, then it ain’t your goal.
There’s zero chance of YouTube. And you might be looking for the quick fix to make yourself feel better. In a moment, I set this new group, big, hairy, audacious goal. Well, that’s cute, but ain’t nothing more than that until you get full in level 10, commitment it happening. Here’s the other thing about it.
Like whatever that goal is, I could take it, give it to you gifted to you. And it wouldn’t change a damn thing because of what we started with here. You didn’t become the person you need to be in order to deserve the receiving of that goal. And it’s not about the goal. The goal is a way to measure our change as a human soul, our change as a human being.
That’s what the goal does. That is the, if you’re saying what’s the secret behind the secret, it’s becoming the person. You gotta be to do this stuff. You got to [00:13:00] do to have what you want to have. So that. You can give back that’s the game. That’s where the impact, that’s where the fulfillment all takes place.
Right. But if I gave it to you, man, there is zero opportunity for you to give Holy, because not just about giving a physical thing, it’s about putting up this. That makes sense.
Mike: [00:13:23] Amazing. Pat. So one of the, one of the challenges, I think a lot of real estate investors have as they get to a point to where.
They plateau out because the businesses there make more money than they ever have before they feel like my needs are taken care of. And they don’t have a lot of motivation to go above that. Like I’m comfortable. Right. And the truth is, is if that’s somebody’s goal, there’s nothing wrong with that. Right.
But I think a lot of us say, we want more, we want to push higher. But sometimes the why, I guess kind of the, why isn’t strong enough, right? The reason that. We’re going to make that a Hey, an eight out of 10 is my, is the, a level of [00:14:00] commitment I have versus a 10 out of 10, because at the end of the day, it’s not really going to impact my life.
I mean, kind of maybe help us understand how to tie. Cause I think sometimes you can tie, like to hit a goal. You can. So sometimes people might say, look, I want to make more money so I can give more money to my church or do something from a charity standpoint. Or I can. Do something, right. It’s a tool. Um, but it’s not like I need to eat, like you’re kind of beyond this survival mode, just like I want to get to the next level and the why might not be as strong enough as survival, if you kind of think of a Maslow’s hierarchy needs.
Like, I, I still want to achieve that. Like,
Pat: [00:14:36] how do you.
Mike: [00:14:37] How do you, I mean, how hard attempts, just,
Pat: [00:14:40] how do you manifest the desire if you’re comfortable, right? Yep. Well, let let’s first, first appreciate to your point, right? There’s no shame in being comfortable in the mat, that kind of guy that would ever shame somebody for that, but let’s throw in a couple, like other pieces [00:15:00] here.
Um, discipline equals. Freedom. We’ve heard that a thousand times, right? I’d say put discipline, equal sign freedom, and put in line through the equals. Okay. So let’s just get clear on this piece of it too. We can move on to the next discussion on Australia. This one’s not equal freedom. If freedom is a freedom of choice, which is really what we’re talking about over Hampshire.
Some of your other guests said that were for choice to do what you want when you want with whom you want for whatever long one, that’s the kind of normal freedom. We’ve kind of talked about this for just the opposite. Discipline is doing what you have to do when you have to do it, even though you don’t want to.
And there’s, it’s very, very important takeaway here because that kind of runs smack in the face. So we’ll do what you love and love what you do. Yeah. In a freaking fantasy world. Right? Like doesn’t always work that way. There’s parts of what we love all the time. And there’s parts. We don’t love so much, but as a [00:16:00] collective, we love the overall outcome, the impact of what we’re doing on the universe.
Right. So we can love this. And even love some pieces in here and completely dislike other pieces in there and we still be doing the exact thing we’re supposed to be doing in the room. Okay. So let’s start with that. Now. Let’s also go back to, well, Pat, I’m comfortable. We’ve got to get really clear on what that means.
Okay. And again, don’t anybody take this as a shaming or anything like that? We are, we are completely wired. The opposite of staying the same. We need constant change. It’s in our freaking DNA, and that will constantly tug at us to not stand still, to constantly be evolving, getting better, making a bigger impact.
Always. There’ll be challenges with that and that we might get tired in the journey. We might get a little scared along the way. We might have a big major setback and it scars us a bit. So we’re [00:17:00] better in our comforts on it. And we’ll start making excuses as to why we’re just comfortable. We’re okay. With the way we are.
And this is the time to shine a bright light on our reality right now, and understanding what’s going on. Cause it’s very easy to get stuck here in the everyday, everyday, the predictable, the certainty that that was a lot of certainty out there right now. But, um, Every single time I’ve been confronted with them.
Just, I just don’t know what I want. I’m just comfortable. It’s usually a result of that. Discomfort of change has been Anesta sized so much that we can’t feel the discomfort and we can do that a bunch of different ways. We can do it through daily distractions. We can do it through drugs and alcohol and gambling and other crazy things.
But let’s do the answer to your question is no, we’re not comfortable. And if we’re not feeling the discomfort of standing still it’s cause we’ve creatively unnecessary as we’ve covered up that pain in the moment. So we don’t have to confront it. [00:18:00] Yeah. That did that answer that for you enough to, yeah,
Mike: [00:18:03] no, I’m just, I think there’s a lot of people that get it and I’m guilty of it too.
It’s like, I get to a point to where you’re like, I S I always, I always aspire this one have a problem with it for hires. A lot of entrepreneurs, at least we moved the goal line all the time. Right. So like, I want to achieve this and I get to that point, or I don’t, but I just like, I either move the goal line.
Well, let me, let me lower the goal. Cause I don’t think I can really hit that now or let me, I achieved some accomplishment and I’m like, well, That wasn’t as hard as I thought. So let me move it. So it’s this constant. Yeah, it’s never a destination. It’s like a journey. Right.
Pat: [00:18:33] But I think
Mike: [00:18:34] that it gets harder pushing it out as you grow your business.
Once you get beyond your. Daily needs being met. Your family’s going to eat. You’ve got a nice house. You’re doing things that are fine. A lot of, a lot of people just start to, they, they feel like they should stretch higher. They give some half-hearted attempts. They don’t meet their, they beat themselves up because they’re not hitting it, but they’re really giving it half hearted attempts.
Right. See an contractors will. I mean, I’ve had contractors that are like, well, I made, you know, [00:19:00] more money. Yeah. Through October this year than I did last year. So I’m going to take the rest of the year off. It’s like, Oh, As an entrepreneur. I’m like, what the heck? But, you know, it’s a real thing, right?
People just start to get to a point to where they’re like, well, I don’t want it as bad as I don’t want that next goal as bad as I wanted the last one. And at some point you start to pull back. Right?
Pat: [00:19:18] Yeah. And that, and again, this is passing judgment on no one, right? Because everybody goes, you go through seasons in your career.
Absolutely gone where I pushed hard, push hard, push, hard, push hard, and just needed a freaking break. And I got to a plateau and I just needed some time, you know, um, wasn’t quitting. Wasn’t undoing anything, but I wasn’t ready to jump back in the game. Does that make sense? Yeah, for sure. Push so far, got things working.
Awesome. The revenues coming in and were stabilized. Last thing I wanted to do is create more instability. Well, that plateau gets old. It really does because [00:20:00] it lacks fulfillment. Yeah. It, when you, when you look at looking at it this way, Mike, okay. We’re all given these a set of innate God, given skills and talents from birth unique and special.
Each one of us, right? One off recipe. It’s our responsibility. To make the most of those gifts. And we can’t do that sitting on our butt and it’s built in our system to make sure that doesn’t happen. Yeah. Jane think break. No doubt. Right. When my gut youngest gets through high school, um, which is three years from now, my wife and I going to take a year off, we’re going to go do this thing called the great loop in a boat, you know, Um, most likely about a month and I’m going to lose my freaking mind.
Okay. And wanting to do something and then we’ll figure out how to do it on the road. But that’s. Okay. Does it mean where you’re not, you’re still not growing and moving forward, but I would caution anyone if you just find you’re completely lacking any desire to move [00:21:00] forward. Appreciate that. That it is not that you don’t have the desire.
There’s something else going on and it’s worth looking into your soul a little figure it out.
Mike: [00:21:09] Yeah. Yeah. I think a lot of entrepreneurs, sometimes we feel guilty for like now, so I was not wanting more, but like you said, sometimes it’s just like, Just take a break. Like you don’t have to constantly be constantly, constantly be taking it to the next level.
You can just pause and it
Pat: [00:21:24] brings up like that whole team grind, like, like, like grinding is like, I don’t know, admirable or something. Right. Not man. You know, I don’t know the rugby field. We grind, it hurts. And my body shows the grinding scars from that, but on a daily basis, last thing I want to do is grind.
Right. I agree. Every once in a while you find yourself in a spot man, where you got to go hard and you go, but that’s not the goal. That’s the exception. That’s the fill in spot. Oh,
Mike: [00:21:56] I agree. I agree. So Pat, you’ve been around a lot of investors for a long time. What, [00:22:00] what do you think differentiates those that, uh, Kind of meet their goals.
Those are the six success standards. Successful is a, is a weird word. Cause everybody’s goal is different, right? But let’s just give the context of meeting their goals, what they really want to accomplish. Some people fall short of that and they never get there. And then some do now in this group of people they’re gonna be listening to, this are more experienced investors, not, not really newbies in this group.
Um, so talk about those that kind of just, you know, are able to hit their goals without a lot of. I guess a lot of a strife and then some that just can never seem to get there. Yeah. What differentiates those people?
Pat: [00:22:40] We talked a little bit about this, but I’ll bring it up and I’ll put it kinda in again, context here.
Um, one of the biggest difference, I’m sure Mike you’ve seen us a thousand times is when you come up upon a very intentional, clear human being, um, That is the same human being who [00:23:00] constantly achieves the next level, the next level, the next level, because they’re very intentional about, and they’re very crystal clear on where it is.
They’re going, anyone who lacks that intention or lacks that clarity kind of flounders a lot. And especially today, man, I don’t know how many people I hear almost daily as in Pat, man, I’ve never been so busy and I’ve never been less productive. I’m like, Hmm. That’s like telling me you’re hopping in your car to go on a trip, but all you’re doing is driving in circles, right?
That’s exactly what’s happening. And in, you know, business worlds, that means we’re not clear on what is we’re doing. We’re clear. We could write down with, could reverse engineer, a very specific plan to get there and then turn our ass around and just start chunking them off one at a time, we lack that clarity.
We came. Put together a map. And then what we find ourselves doing right on a daily basis is being busy, which has really is another form of a distraction we find stuff to do. So at the end of the day, we can look [00:24:00] back. So we didn’t sit on our ass. So they, what the real question we should be asking yourself is how much progress did we make when we can’t answer that on daily basis, Mike it’s really, it’s a timer.
We just got to go stop. What is it that I’m working towards and start with that, that piece right there. And I put it in a trifecta and almost ran out a time here between, uh, uh, the, the light house, your boat and your fuel for the boat. So your vision being your lighthouse, your mission is the way you’re going to get to your lighthouse and the fuel for your boat.
That’s your purpose behind it? The lighthouse that’s, that’s got to be bright, shiny, always in one spot. So no matter how washed you get, all you gotta do is look up and you can really point your ship towards that, that, that outcome. And that’s what most entrepreneurs that flounder lack
Mike: [00:24:51] makes sense. Makes sense.
Because you’re, you know, and sometimes I think part of the problem is we. We talked about this a little bit today, already social media, you use social [00:25:00] media and you latch onto somebody else’s goals or some of what somebody else has accomplished. Right. Which is it’s easy to do these days and say, well, I want that too.
It’s like, well, why do you want that?
Pat: [00:25:09] Right. You know, one of the best things I’ve ever heard, I didn’t know the word. I can’t even give anybody credit for it because I don’t know where I got it from. He says, the best thing you could ever do is be the best in the world. That’s something. Which is at first an overwhelming thing to be challenged with up.
And until you realize that, okay, if you just do you. And do it the best you can. There’s no one walking this earth that can do you as well as you. And the second we, I compare myself to Mike Hambright and I start trying to be like my hand, my cam, right. I’m phenomenal at it. I’ll be nowhere near as good as Mike could be Mike Hambright and that’s the truth.
And that’s the problem. When we start comparing ourselves and then it goes one step lower. Once I realized I can’t be my camera. [00:26:00] Right. I start looking at what Mike Hambright has and what I have and the gap in between that stuff. It’s called lack what I don’t have. And instead of focusing on where I want to go, I focus on where I go.
I can’t go on what I don’t have. And now it’s a spiral going back down. We go all day on comparing and competing, but generally speaking, it’s dangerous. The upside to it is when you look up to someone that you admire. And you use that as inspiration to be the best version of you, but using them as kind of a stepping stone, if you will move in your forward.
That’s different.
Mike: [00:26:39] Yup. Yeah, for sure.
Pat: [00:26:40] Awesome. My camera.

Pat: [00:00:31] I’m awesome, brother.
Mike: [00:00:32] Awesome. Hey, total. Totally fitting. You’ve got the American flag right behind you. And the reason we’re doing this whole event is happens to be around just the, just the idea of kind of latching onto the holiday.
That’s coming up 4th of July and you know, I’ve been thinking about, uh, I mentioned this earlier, so some people have already heard this, but. Just, you know, I think my favorite holidays of the year, this might sound a little weird, uh, the 4th of July and Thanksgiving, and it’s opportunity to kind of reflect on all that.
We’re [00:01:00] blessed for all that we, you know, that we have in this, in this opportunity, in this industry and in life and certainly in this country. Right. And so, uh, that’s why I wanted to do this event. So hopefully everybody’s getting some good value here. Next time we got my buddy Pat free court, really an industry legend, just a huge giver himself.
Everybody that I bring on. I talked about this before, when I do all these events, I just, I asked my friends to join me because they’re big givers. We all like to help each other. And they have a lots of share that hopefully inspires you to take your business to the next level. So maybe just take a minute for those that, that might not know you that are on here, just kind of who you are.
And then I want to kind of jump into what, you know, maybe share what freedom means to you. Sure.
Pat: [00:01:37] So I’ve been involved in real estate since, uh, uh, late nineties when, um, strong, heavy in the short sales stuff for many, many, many, many years have gone through the fix and flip phase for a bunch of years, got into what I call, um, high risk, high reward properties, which are expertise coming out of the negotiation of, of liens in debt.
In the short sale space. [00:02:00] Got us into understanding how to get rid of. Um, title issues and things like that, or contaminated oil tank issues and all of that kind of crazy stuff, right? All this stuff, nobody else won. And we spent a lot of time. There spent a bunch of years in the education, specifically in the real estate education space, along the way that really helped move me into, at least that was a seed worked where I am now, which is in a personal.
Probably the best way to describe it is just personal behavior, understanding our behavior and how to alter our behavior to get the results we want. And, um, that’s probably the simplest way to describe it. Competitive athlete played 17 years of rugby, a bunch of years in martial arts in cage fighting and, um, Wow.
That’s me. They’re not shell.
Mike: [00:02:46] I’m glad you’re my friend. I don’t ever want to fight you back. Hey, for those of you that are listed, that are, that are joining in here or even those that are joining later, just, just chat. If you haven’t already, what freedom means to you. And I want to ask you that same question, Pat.
You’ve been in this business a long time. I know [00:03:00] you’re I know you’re a big Patriot and I know that you, as an entrepreneur, you appreciate all the opportunities that we’ve had, um, being a part of real estate and being in this country. Right? So maybe just share what freedom means to you as an
Pat: [00:03:10] entrepreneur.
Um, so I don’t know if it says an entrepreneur is just a human soul. Right. And I follow, I bought this a while because it was my, what I thought was freedom was in freedom. Um, as a matter of fact, it seemed to get further, further and further away from freedom. And it never even, it never even occurred to me what was going on until I met some, some dudes that I work with from the personal development side that were.
55 years old, they’re coming out of wall street. They have more money than, than they could ever do anything with. They have more cars in house and know what to do with, but they’ve burnt through the third marriage. Their kids freaking hate them and they can’t even get there. They can’t even get a friend to go out to dinner with them unless they’re pie.
You know what I mean? And they thought they knew what freedom [00:04:00] was too, but they’re misalignment with what it meant. So my point is I spent a lot of time deep diving into this. I’ll break it down really simply Mike into three types of freedom. Right? One of them is freedom from something like liberating ourselves from something.
Second is freedom to do something. And then third, and this is the big one freedom to become someone. That we want to become. Right. And, and the, the there’s a migration between the three, but the first one, freedom, something that’s like freedom from the 905 job. Right. As an example, well, you got to earn that.
There’s certain things you got to do to make that happen, but also could be freedom from other anchors in your life. Other commitments, other things, other holes you’ve dug yourself into. And I’ll, I’ll, I’ll say this and it’s not going to. May resonate differently with different people, but every time we make a commitment, um, we give up freedom.
Every time we make a commitment, we give up freedom. So freedom isn’t [00:05:00] necessarily the Holy grail of it all. And an example would be in my marriage, right? The married 27 year, 27 awesome years. But I’m not absolutely free. If I made a commitment to marriage and one woman for life, you see the balance there.
We have to appreciate kind of where those hands. So, you know, three pieces of freedom from something freedom to something and then freedom to become someone. And that part is what I focus on the most. Who do we want to become in order to have what it is we want to have in this, in this world? Does that make sense?
I explained to her for sure,
Mike: [00:05:35] maybe elaborate on, um, To become. So I’ll let you, you, you and I both know there’s a lot of people and that’s part of the reason I created this group. I know there’s a lot of people that still want to take their business to the next level, whatever that means for them. Like we, we don’t, you guys, we just had Jerry Green on here and he’s doing, you know, he said he had 37 deals in the pipeline.
He’s doing 1520 deals a month. This is not one of those groups where it’s like, Hey, sure. You’re not. [00:06:00] You know, there’s something wrong with you, right? Not at all. Everybody has different goals. Everybody has, you know, everybody has different, a different vision, what they want their life to look like. Right.
And so it’s not that that’s not the goal. The goal is whatever your goal is to hit that. But maybe you could share there are you, and I both know there’s a lot of people that are, have plateaued at some level that is not where they want to be. Maybe let’s talk about, cause you talk about the freedom to become that person.
Right. Yeah. Some people kind of hit a wall and they just, they can’t get there for some reason. Talk, let’s talk about that a little bit.
Pat: [00:06:29] Okay. So let’s talk, let’s use it. Context of state goals, right? If you’re talking about Platt towing and not being able to, um, get, get up to the next goal or level, or what are tier, whatever you want to call it.
Right. Um, so let’s, let’s start with the idea that, and then we’ll spend a couple minutes here on goals because it’s just, we always talk about goals. Well, most goals never get even started. Nevermind, achieved and goals are a path to freedom. So we’ll use it in that context. Right. Um, if you’ve ever [00:07:00] set a goal.
Any goal. The very first question we got to ask her, so said, I’m assuming the goal is something that we haven’t achieved yet. We’re not there yet. We don’t have it yet. Right. It’s beyond where we’re at. That’s makes sense to be a goal. Um, the first question we could ask ourselves is not the how or the what it’s the, who, who do I have to become.
In order to deserve that end result, because what I mean by that is to, to have something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do it, something that you’ve never done, that humans, we got to first become someone we’ve never been. And we fail often asked that question. It might require that we become a little more courageous because we had to overcome certain fears.
It might require that we get a little more, yeah. Discipline in our daily actions. We add consistency in, into the process. It might require that we become a little more grateful for what we already have, because our lack of being grateful is what stops us from I’m driving harder and further along. Right.
Yup. That’s a starting point [00:08:00] in breaking, breaking through these plateaus to that next thing. Um, and that’s what I say the starting point, but first is always around goals. What are, if you’re at a plateau and you can’t punch through it, and there’s a thing here you want to get to. Right, right. Um, you got to get crystal clear on what that thing is.
An example would be, I want to lose some weight that ain’t crystal clear. There’s a whole bunch of ways that can happen. And how do you even know if you achieved it? When it’s got such a loose definition example, Mike, you come into my gym saying, man, I want to lose some weight. So I lop off your right arm, done.
Mike, pay up. I met Pat and it sounds like crude and kind of like a moron, like example. But I see people go to they’re 56 years old. They find have their arm lopped off. And they’re like, no, that’s not what I meant. Cause it’s, I’m not feeling what I meant. I wanted to feel like. Yeah, you weren’t very, very clear on your goals.
What you wanted was to be a, have a fulfilled life. Well, you ended [00:09:00] up with was a life of achievement, lacking fulfillment. Cause we didn’t get clear on what it is we really want. And I’ll go back to the weight, losing weight. Pat, what I want is to lose 20 pounds. Good Mike, but we’re not there. All we can do is measure it now, but it still doesn’t mean anything to you.
What is 20? We found those I’d say, Hey, I want to make a million bucks. Money has no meaning weight has no meaning material things have no meaning. And without meaning they’re unachievable. Hmm without meaning they’re unachievable. But when that same guy tells me, man, my marriage has been kind of on the rocks.
And I think it’s because I’ve lost myself, competence. I feel like shit. I look in the mirror. I don’t even like the guy looking back at me and I want that mojo back because I want my wife back and I want, I want, I want her to be happy to see the guy sitting across from Methodist the way it looked, but the way he feels himself.
Alright, I can deliver you that. And we’ll use the weight just to measure, but here’s the power in this, right? When the going gets tough and it [00:10:00] always does in our achieving of goals, particularly if they’re challenging goals, it always gets difficult. There’s always problems along the way. It never goes with plan a, B, C, or D.
Right. We always need the next backup. If we don’t have that deep seated, real, genuine, why we’re doing it, the real one, the meaning behind it, we’re going to quit. Don’t have to ask me or believe me, look at your own life and how many goals that have been quit in our lives. Right? All of us, including mine without attaching the meeting, then the third piece to it.
Once we’ve got clarity, we want to go and we had a little meaning a little. Is there a level of commitment? It’s funny. I just got off the phone with a cop, with a client of mine talking about his commitment and his lack thereof. And I always use a qualifying question. How committed are you? If one is, you really don’t give a crap.
If it happens, it does. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t 10 being you’re as committed as you are to taking your next breath. Right. Which for all of you listening, you never miss your next breath. [00:11:00] You always take it always no matter what, no matter how busy you are stressed, you are how tired you are, no matter what you always take.
Your next breath, that level of commitment to 10. How committed are you? Typical answer would be like a seven or an eight, sometimes even a nine. Right. So you’re a nine is as good as the zero. Here’s why, when you just tell me it’s a nine, leave yourself a way out. Well, what if, well, guess what, you will take that exit door somewhere along this journey, because you’re going to be challenged to that level.
That’s how life works. And if you leave that door open, even crack you sneaking through it, when you’re weak, when you’re down, when you’re depressed, when you’re in your rough, unless you’re a level of tenure commitment, don’t count. You’re going where shit you’re wasting your time. That’s what we start in getting over you as, how do you get to that next level?
That plateau, you gotta put a little energy, UCLA, get a little juice up, just talking about, you’ve got to get into the game here and desire this stuff and want this stuff. [00:12:00] And it admit yourself, be honest with yourself when you’re looking at that goal, you’re defining exactly what it is. If you’re not feeling it, then it ain’t your goal.
There’s zero chance of YouTube. And you might be looking for the quick fix to make yourself feel better. In a moment, I set this new group, big, hairy, audacious goal. Well, that’s cute, but ain’t nothing more than that until you get full in level 10, commitment it happening. Here’s the other thing about it.
Like whatever that goal is, I could take it, give it to you gifted to you. And it wouldn’t change a damn thing because of what we started with here. You didn’t become the person you need to be in order to deserve the receiving of that goal. And it’s not about the goal. The goal is a way to measure our change as a human soul, our change as a human being.
That’s what the goal does. That is the, if you’re saying what’s the secret behind the secret, it’s becoming the person. You gotta be to do this stuff. You got to [00:13:00] do to have what you want to have. So that. You can give back that’s the game. That’s where the impact, that’s where the fulfillment all takes place.
Right. But if I gave it to you, man, there is zero opportunity for you to give Holy, because not just about giving a physical thing, it’s about putting up this. That makes sense.
Mike: [00:13:23] Amazing. Pat. So one of the, one of the challenges, I think a lot of real estate investors have as they get to a point to where.
They plateau out because the businesses there make more money than they ever have before they feel like my needs are taken care of. And they don’t have a lot of motivation to go above that. Like I’m comfortable. Right. And the truth is, is if that’s somebody’s goal, there’s nothing wrong with that. Right.
But I think a lot of us say, we want more, we want to push higher. But sometimes the why, I guess kind of the, why isn’t strong enough, right? The reason that. We’re going to make that a Hey, an eight out of 10 is my, is the, a level of [00:14:00] commitment I have versus a 10 out of 10, because at the end of the day, it’s not really going to impact my life.
I mean, kind of maybe help us understand how to tie. Cause I think sometimes you can tie, like to hit a goal. You can. So sometimes people might say, look, I want to make more money so I can give more money to my church or do something from a charity standpoint. Or I can. Do something, right. It’s a tool. Um, but it’s not like I need to eat, like you’re kind of beyond this survival mode, just like I want to get to the next level and the why might not be as strong enough as survival, if you kind of think of a Maslow’s hierarchy needs.
Like, I, I still want to achieve that. Like,
Pat: [00:14:36] how do you.
Mike: [00:14:37] How do you, I mean, how hard attempts, just,
Pat: [00:14:40] how do you manifest the desire if you’re comfortable, right? Yep. Well, let let’s first, first appreciate to your point, right? There’s no shame in being comfortable in the mat, that kind of guy that would ever shame somebody for that, but let’s throw in a couple, like other pieces [00:15:00] here.
Um, discipline equals. Freedom. We’ve heard that a thousand times, right? I’d say put discipline, equal sign freedom, and put in line through the equals. Okay. So let’s just get clear on this piece of it too. We can move on to the next discussion on Australia. This one’s not equal freedom. If freedom is a freedom of choice, which is really what we’re talking about over Hampshire.
Some of your other guests said that were for choice to do what you want when you want with whom you want for whatever long one, that’s the kind of normal freedom. We’ve kind of talked about this for just the opposite. Discipline is doing what you have to do when you have to do it, even though you don’t want to.
And there’s, it’s very, very important takeaway here because that kind of runs smack in the face. So we’ll do what you love and love what you do. Yeah. In a freaking fantasy world. Right? Like doesn’t always work that way. There’s parts of what we love all the time. And there’s parts. We don’t love so much, but as a [00:16:00] collective, we love the overall outcome, the impact of what we’re doing on the universe.
Right. So we can love this. And even love some pieces in here and completely dislike other pieces in there and we still be doing the exact thing we’re supposed to be doing in the room. Okay. So let’s start with that. Now. Let’s also go back to, well, Pat, I’m comfortable. We’ve got to get really clear on what that means.
Okay. And again, don’t anybody take this as a shaming or anything like that? We are, we are completely wired. The opposite of staying the same. We need constant change. It’s in our freaking DNA, and that will constantly tug at us to not stand still, to constantly be evolving, getting better, making a bigger impact.
Always. There’ll be challenges with that and that we might get tired in the journey. We might get a little scared along the way. We might have a big major setback and it scars us a bit. So we’re [00:17:00] better in our comforts on it. And we’ll start making excuses as to why we’re just comfortable. We’re okay. With the way we are.
And this is the time to shine a bright light on our reality right now, and understanding what’s going on. Cause it’s very easy to get stuck here in the everyday, everyday, the predictable, the certainty that that was a lot of certainty out there right now. But, um, Every single time I’ve been confronted with them.
Just, I just don’t know what I want. I’m just comfortable. It’s usually a result of that. Discomfort of change has been Anesta sized so much that we can’t feel the discomfort and we can do that a bunch of different ways. We can do it through daily distractions. We can do it through drugs and alcohol and gambling and other crazy things.
But let’s do the answer to your question is no, we’re not comfortable. And if we’re not feeling the discomfort of standing still it’s cause we’ve creatively unnecessary as we’ve covered up that pain in the moment. So we don’t have to confront it. [00:18:00] Yeah. That did that answer that for you enough to, yeah,
Mike: [00:18:03] no, I’m just, I think there’s a lot of people that get it and I’m guilty of it too.
It’s like, I get to a point to where you’re like, I S I always, I always aspire this one have a problem with it for hires. A lot of entrepreneurs, at least we moved the goal line all the time. Right. So like, I want to achieve this and I get to that point, or I don’t, but I just like, I either move the goal line.
Well, let me, let me lower the goal. Cause I don’t think I can really hit that now or let me, I achieved some accomplishment and I’m like, well, That wasn’t as hard as I thought. So let me move it. So it’s this constant. Yeah, it’s never a destination. It’s like a journey. Right.
Pat: [00:18:33] But I think
Mike: [00:18:34] that it gets harder pushing it out as you grow your business.
Once you get beyond your. Daily needs being met. Your family’s going to eat. You’ve got a nice house. You’re doing things that are fine. A lot of, a lot of people just start to, they, they feel like they should stretch higher. They give some half-hearted attempts. They don’t meet their, they beat themselves up because they’re not hitting it, but they’re really giving it half hearted attempts.
Right. See an contractors will. I mean, I’ve had contractors that are like, well, I made, you know, [00:19:00] more money. Yeah. Through October this year than I did last year. So I’m going to take the rest of the year off. It’s like, Oh, As an entrepreneur. I’m like, what the heck? But, you know, it’s a real thing, right?
People just start to get to a point to where they’re like, well, I don’t want it as bad as I don’t want that next goal as bad as I wanted the last one. And at some point you start to pull back. Right?
Pat: [00:19:18] Yeah. And that, and again, this is passing judgment on no one, right? Because everybody goes, you go through seasons in your career.
Absolutely gone where I pushed hard, push hard, push, hard, push hard, and just needed a freaking break. And I got to a plateau and I just needed some time, you know, um, wasn’t quitting. Wasn’t undoing anything, but I wasn’t ready to jump back in the game. Does that make sense? Yeah, for sure. Push so far, got things working.
Awesome. The revenues coming in and were stabilized. Last thing I wanted to do is create more instability. Well, that plateau gets old. It really does because [00:20:00] it lacks fulfillment. Yeah. It, when you, when you look at looking at it this way, Mike, okay. We’re all given these a set of innate God, given skills and talents from birth unique and special.
Each one of us, right? One off recipe. It’s our responsibility. To make the most of those gifts. And we can’t do that sitting on our butt and it’s built in our system to make sure that doesn’t happen. Yeah. Jane think break. No doubt. Right. When my gut youngest gets through high school, um, which is three years from now, my wife and I going to take a year off, we’re going to go do this thing called the great loop in a boat, you know, Um, most likely about a month and I’m going to lose my freaking mind.
Okay. And wanting to do something and then we’ll figure out how to do it on the road. But that’s. Okay. Does it mean where you’re not, you’re still not growing and moving forward, but I would caution anyone if you just find you’re completely lacking any desire to move [00:21:00] forward. Appreciate that. That it is not that you don’t have the desire.
There’s something else going on and it’s worth looking into your soul a little figure it out.
Mike: [00:21:09] Yeah. Yeah. I think a lot of entrepreneurs, sometimes we feel guilty for like now, so I was not wanting more, but like you said, sometimes it’s just like, Just take a break. Like you don’t have to constantly be constantly, constantly be taking it to the next level.
You can just pause and it
Pat: [00:21:24] brings up like that whole team grind, like, like, like grinding is like, I don’t know, admirable or something. Right. Not man. You know, I don’t know the rugby field. We grind, it hurts. And my body shows the grinding scars from that, but on a daily basis, last thing I want to do is grind.
Right. I agree. Every once in a while you find yourself in a spot man, where you got to go hard and you go, but that’s not the goal. That’s the exception. That’s the fill in spot. Oh,
Mike: [00:21:56] I agree. I agree. So Pat, you’ve been around a lot of investors for a long time. What, [00:22:00] what do you think differentiates those that, uh, Kind of meet their goals.
Those are the six success standards. Successful is a, is a weird word. Cause everybody’s goal is different, right? But let’s just give the context of meeting their goals, what they really want to accomplish. Some people fall short of that and they never get there. And then some do now in this group of people they’re gonna be listening to, this are more experienced investors, not, not really newbies in this group.
Um, so talk about those that kind of just, you know, are able to hit their goals without a lot of. I guess a lot of a strife and then some that just can never seem to get there. Yeah. What differentiates those people?
Pat: [00:22:40] We talked a little bit about this, but I’ll bring it up and I’ll put it kinda in again, context here.
Um, one of the biggest difference, I’m sure Mike you’ve seen us a thousand times is when you come up upon a very intentional, clear human being, um, That is the same human being who [00:23:00] constantly achieves the next level, the next level, the next level, because they’re very intentional about, and they’re very crystal clear on where it is.
They’re going, anyone who lacks that intention or lacks that clarity kind of flounders a lot. And especially today, man, I don’t know how many people I hear almost daily as in Pat, man, I’ve never been so busy and I’ve never been less productive. I’m like, Hmm. That’s like telling me you’re hopping in your car to go on a trip, but all you’re doing is driving in circles, right?
That’s exactly what’s happening. And in, you know, business worlds, that means we’re not clear on what is we’re doing. We’re clear. We could write down with, could reverse engineer, a very specific plan to get there and then turn our ass around and just start chunking them off one at a time, we lack that clarity.
We came. Put together a map. And then what we find ourselves doing right on a daily basis is being busy, which has really is another form of a distraction we find stuff to do. So at the end of the day, we can look [00:24:00] back. So we didn’t sit on our ass. So they, what the real question we should be asking yourself is how much progress did we make when we can’t answer that on daily basis, Mike it’s really, it’s a timer.
We just got to go stop. What is it that I’m working towards and start with that, that piece right there. And I put it in a trifecta and almost ran out a time here between, uh, uh, the, the light house, your boat and your fuel for the boat. So your vision being your lighthouse, your mission is the way you’re going to get to your lighthouse and the fuel for your boat.
That’s your purpose behind it? The lighthouse that’s, that’s got to be bright, shiny, always in one spot. So no matter how washed you get, all you gotta do is look up and you can really point your ship towards that, that, that outcome. And that’s what most entrepreneurs that flounder lack
Mike: [00:24:51] makes sense. Makes sense.
Because you’re, you know, and sometimes I think part of the problem is we. We talked about this a little bit today, already social media, you use social [00:25:00] media and you latch onto somebody else’s goals or some of what somebody else has accomplished. Right. Which is it’s easy to do these days and say, well, I want that too.
It’s like, well, why do you want that?
Pat: [00:25:09] Right. You know, one of the best things I’ve ever heard, I didn’t know the word. I can’t even give anybody credit for it because I don’t know where I got it from. He says, the best thing you could ever do is be the best in the world. That’s something. Which is at first an overwhelming thing to be challenged with up.
And until you realize that, okay, if you just do you. And do it the best you can. There’s no one walking this earth that can do you as well as you. And the second we, I compare myself to Mike Hambright and I start trying to be like my hand, my cam, right. I’m phenomenal at it. I’ll be nowhere near as good as Mike could be Mike Hambright and that’s the truth.
And that’s the problem. When we start comparing ourselves and then it goes one step lower. Once I realized I can’t be my camera. [00:26:00] Right. I start looking at what Mike Hambright has and what I have and the gap in between that stuff. It’s called lack what I don’t have. And instead of focusing on where I want to go, I focus on where I go.
I can’t go on what I don’t have. And now it’s a spiral going back down. We go all day on comparing and competing, but generally speaking, it’s dangerous. The upside to it is when you look up to someone that you admire. And you use that as inspiration to be the best version of you, but using them as kind of a stepping stone, if you will move in your forward.
That’s different.
Mike: [00:26:39] Yup. Yeah, for sure.
Pat: [00:26:40] Awesome. My camera.
