Aaron: People have asked me, “What is the one thing I need to do in order to really be successful?” And the truth is the main thing you have to do is change what’s going on inside of your mind. Not running around frantically trying to get involved in the current craze, but you change the way you think.
The greatest reference book that I’ve ever read to really change the way you look at the world and opportunity is a book that’s almost 100 years old now. It was written back in, I think, 1918 by a fellow named Wallace Wattles, and the name of the book is “The Science of Getting Rich.” And some people are actually turned off by that title a little bit because they think, “Oh, well getting rich is somehow vulgar.”
Well, if you want to have a rich life, if you want to have a rich relationships, if you want to have rich social experiences or if you want to gain financial wealth, the way you have to do it is through a series of steps that changes your brain that gets you to see every opportunity in a way that is not absolutely obvious to us.
So here’s the deal. This is a little book. It’s only about 70 pages long. You can get it for free online, or you can buy a copy. I’ll tell you what. I have the Scriptures next to my bed and I have “The Science of Getting Rich” next to my bed. I have “The Science of Getting Rich” on my phone, on my iPad, on my computer. That book is with me everywhere I go.
It’s a little short book. Here’s the trick if you want to change your life. You want to read the book one time cover to cover. Wattles writes in kind of a funky vernacular. There are some things that are expressions you’re not used to hearing. You need to kind of get used to that. Read it cover to cover. It’ll take you about, I don’t’ know, it depends on how fast you read, maybe 40 minutes. And then after you’ve read it cover to cover, read these four chapters every day for 30 days, and if you miss a day start over and do the whole 30 days. Here are the four chapters. Write them down: 4, 7, 11, and 14.
I had a very successful real estate investor come to me about 18 months ago. I didn’t talk to him for years, and he said, “Aaron, I know you’ve been through some hard times. You’ve bounced back from adversity before. I’m about ready to lose my marriage. My kids don’t want to be around me. I’ve completely lost all my wealth, my home is in foreclosure.” And the last time I’d seen the guy, he was riding high, doing huge real estate deals. He said, “I’m so depressed. I feel like taking my own life. What do I do?”
And I said, “Well, first of all, maybe you want to talk to a counselor or somebody else that’ll help you, because I’m no psychologist. But I’ll tell you, if you want to turn your life around, do two things. Get a clear vision of where you’re going in your life. Write it down and commit it to memory and do it every day, and get this little book. Read it cover to cover and then read, 4, 7, 11, and 14.”
He called me at Christmastime over a year later and he said, “Hey, I see that you’re speaking at this big event. Do you think that’s an event I should go to?” And I said, “Well, sure, it’s a great event, but how are you doing? The last time I talked to you, you were getting ready to jump off the bridge.” And he said, “Oh, my gosh, I’m averaging $80,000, $90,000 a month now. My marriage is back on track. Family’s in good shape. We’re out of all trouble. Our bills are paid. Life is great.” I said, “What did you do?” He said, “I did exactly what you told me to do. I created a vision statement, and I read “The Science of Getting Rich” every day.
I can tell you, Mike, story after story after story of people who when they changed their brain, they changed their life. And if real estate runs out and people get into something else, it’s their brain. It’s the way they look at the world and opportunity that will keep them successful over the long haul. So I hope your people will go get Wallace Wattles’ book “The Science of Getting Rich.”
