Mike: Welcome back to the Flipnerd.com REI Classroom, where experts from across the real estate investing industry teach you quick lessons to take your business to the next level. And now, let’s meet today’s expert host.
Pete: Hey, guys, this is Pet Asmus, the Turnkey Investor, and I’m today’s host on the REI Classroom. So don’t go anywhere because today, we’re going to be talking all about, pop your collar, personal branding.

Pete: All right. So let’s talk about this, personal branding. I think a lot of people have a misconception about really what it is. I think a lot of people over 50 think personal branding isn’t something that they even need because they don’t shop at Nordstrom’s. And they’re confusing it with a personal shopper. And I think a lot of the younger generation, when we’re talking about probably 18 to 25, when they think of personal branding, they’re completely missing the boat on the fact that this is a business idea to create wealth long term.
And so their personal branding themselves as somebody they can jump off cliffs or somebody that can yell and scream and be crazy. And where that’s cool and it we’ll get you a girl or a guy or whatever, what it won’t do is raise money later on. And one of the things that I think that I kind of have an advantage of is the age that I’m at, I kind of went through no social media, no Internet, anything like that and then grew into it. So I understand both sides and I love technology. I love it.
But one of the things that a lot of the newer generation, younger kids, whatever, how ever you want to word this, and I feel weird even saying younger kids because I feel like I’m 20 still, so I don’t I don’t feel older, but is that they don’t understand that anything that hits that internet stays forever. And when you’re looking to do something at a professional level later on, you don’t want people looking and seeing you throwing up in front of 15 kids or some crazy thing at Lake Havasu or whatever it may be, whatever area you may be in.
So when you think about personal branding, the sooner you start, the better. And here’s what personal branding really is, it’s creating an environment to share with people who you truly are and allow them in so that they can know, like and trust you. They can see what you do, the way that you do things, but they’re not invading your space, you’re not invading theirs because they’re bringing you into their home and watching these videos, watching that picture, whatever it is, but they’re doing it in their space. So they’re really allowing you to come in.
Now, when they do that and they start spending time with this, they’re really giving you a platform to stand on. And at this point, it’s up to you. You can either leverage that and jump and just skyrocket or you can hit the ground and you can completely crash and burn. And it’s all going to come down to what your personal branding says. People think, “Well, there’s a difference between my business image and my personal image.” No, there isn’t. There isn’t. You may think that there is, but that all went away when social media happened because now we can Google you and I can find out everything about you.
So realize that anything that you do, when you act stupid, and look, I’m not saying everybody acts stupid. I’m saying I do it sometimes. You get all mad, right? And you start blasting somebody on Facebook or Twitter or whatever. It doesn’t make you look good when you’re lighting somebody else up. It doesn’t. It just doesn’t. It may make you feel better for a very short time frame, but it doesn’t make you look good. All it makes people think is, “Man, they’ve got problems.”
The last thing that you want potential investors or whether you’re raising money, whether you’re deploying money, whether you’re doing anything, the reality is you’re building relationships. And people want to do business with people that they know, like and trust. And if you’re doing business with people that are sketchy, that are weird, even if somebody likes you but they see who you’re connected to or they see you’re doing business with, that can completely turn them off.
And you could lose out on opportunities because you’re not paying attention to your brand and to what you’re projecting. And so if you want to get the furthest, the fastest and be the most successful, start building your personal brand right now. Control what goes out, control what is seen, and I’m not saying do everything perfect. Look, if I make a mistake on a video, look, I’ll start it again and I’ll just do it. I do make mistakes. We need to be real.
It’s not about being plastic. It’s not about being fake. You can’t be too perfect because if I have all the right answers and I say it exactly perfect all the time, anybody talking to me is going to be like, “Something is seriously up with him. Like there’s no way, you ask him anything and it’s like he has the exact answer, perfect right on the money, there are no mistakes ever.” And if people don’t see mistakes, they can’t relate to you. And if they can’t relate to you, they’re not going to identify, and they’re not going to trust, and they’re not going to really connect. And when I’m talking about success, connections, those are the things that are going to leverage and they’re going to get you everywhere you want to go.
In this business, nobody does it alone. Nobody. Even Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, who was a one-man band, he still didn’t grow his whole entire business just from him. He may have made the music by himself, but he had an agent, he had a publicist. There are so many people around to create that success. You have to do the same thing. You have to have amazing people around you. And that is going to come down to personal branding because nobody that’s great wants to hang around with people that don’t give a crap, right?
Nobody that’s amazing and cares about their image and that cares about what they’re doing and wants to improve the world and everything wants to hang out with somebody that doesn’t give a crap and sits on the on the couch and plays video games all day and is like, “Well, someday, something will happen.” Man, someday is never going to happen.
